What are no name brand foods?

No name brand foods (sometimes called generic brands) are products you find in grocery stores (and other stores) that are produced by the store company, rather than a separate food company. Each store will have its own specific 'no-name brand foods' that they produce and sell.

No name brand items are cheaper than name brand items (by 20-25% on average). They are cheaper because they spend less money on creating the products, and spend less money marketing those items.

Often, you can also return no name brand items back to the store and they will refund you. They usually won't refund you for name brand items.

Best things to buy no name (that are just as good as name brand)

  • Juices
  • Grain products (Oats, flour, rice, bread, etc.)
  • Herbs/spices (including salt, sugar, and honey)
  • Medicine
  • Most cleaning products
  • Baby food/formula
  • Snacks and sweets

Many no name brand items are just as good as name brand, but there are a few no name brand items that you should avoid:

  •  Cereal (they can often taste bland)
  • Condiments (they can taste different)
  • Plastic wrap (often don't stick that well)
  • Trash bags (often are thin and rip)
  • Diapers (often not as good)
  • Cheese
  • Yogurt (depends on taste)
  • Coffee (may taste different)
