Emergency (ER) vs. Urgent Care

Winnipeg has both emergency (ER) and urgent care centres. Both are open 24/7 every day of the year. Both have doctors and nurses to help treat you.

Emergency Care (ER)

If you have a life-threatening health problem then you should go to emergency care.

 

Health problems where you should go to emergency care (ER):

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Major trauma
  • Severe head injury
  • Loss of limb in an accident
  • Severe difficulty breathing (due to an allergic reaction or another cause)
  • Sexual assault
  • Domestic violence
  • Severe bleeding
  • Any time a person is unconscious

 

Urgent Care

If you have an important health problem that's not life-threatening, but needs to be dealt with immediately, then you should go to urgent care.

 

Health problems where you should go to urgent care:

  • Fever or flu symptoms
  • Fractures or sprains
  • Minor burns
  • Headaches, earaches
  • Nosebleeds
  • Rashes
  • Sore throat
  • Urinary problems
  • Vomiting

 

 

If you just have a minor illness and need help, then you should go to a clinic.
