Common Alcohols in Manitoba

There are many types of alcohol you can buy in Manitoba. You only need to be 18+ years of age.
While there are many types of alcohol there are certain ones you will see a lot. This article will tell you about the common ones you will find.
There are 2 kinds of alcohol groups: undistilled (also known as fermented) and distilled (where they convert a fermented/undistilled drink into another one with an even higher amount of alcohol).
Undistilled Drinks
Beer: most popular alcohol which is made of fermented yeast from grains. Can be anywhere from 2-8% ABV. For more information on the types of beer, click here.
Wine: another very popular alcohol made from fermented grapes. Can be anywhere from 10-20% ABV. For more information on the different types of wine, click here.
Mead: a blend of water and fermented honey. Usually has an ABV between 10-14%.
Hard Cider: basically fermented apple juice. This usually has less alcohol with about 5% ABV.
Sake: Japanese drink made from fermented rice. Can usually find it quite easily here in Manitoba. Has about 16% ABV.
Distilled Drinks
Rum: made from fermented sugarcane or molasses. Has a typical alcohol amount of 40% ABV. There are many types of rum including gold rum, white rum, dark rum, and spiced rum.
Vodka: made from fermented grains and potatoes. Has a standard alcohol amount of 40% ABV. Good for mixing and you can get many fruity flavours of vodka.
Whiskey: made from fermented grains. The ABV of whiskey ranges from 40% to 50%. Can get flavoured whiskey such as vanilla or apple. Scotch, is a popular type of whiskey from Scotland.
Tequila: liquor from Mexico made from the agave plant. The alcohol amount of tequila is typically about 40% ABV. Cheap tequila can taste really bad so it's recommended you pay a little more if you want some good-tasting tequila.
Gin: clear alcohol made from juniper berries. It can have anywhere from 35% to 55% ABV.
Absinthe: made from a variety of leaves and herbs. Can have anywhere from 40-90% ABV, but most commonly has 40-50% ABV.
Brandy: this is distilled wine (wine mixed with harder alcohol). The amount of alcohol in brandy ranges from 35-60% ABV. One famous brandy, Cognac, has 40% ABV.
Everclear: made from grains and has a very high alcohol content. The minimum ABV of Everclear is 60%, but Everclear can also have 75.5% and 95% ABV.
