In Canada all children must go to school and get ane education by law. There are a few options for schooling children:
- free public schools
- paid private schools
- at-home education
- English or French schools
There are 12 Grades to complete until a student receives their high-school diploma. After that, they may want to continue their education onto post-secondary school, or they may want to end their schooling and get a job/career instantly.
There are 4 types of schooling in Canada
- primary (elementary)
- middle school
- secondary
- post-secondary
Primary (or elementary) school
Primary education is generally for kids 4-5 to 10 years old. This usually includes:
- preschool (optional)
- kindergarten
- grade 1 to 4
Middle school
Middle school is generally for kids 10 to 14 years old. This group usually includes Grades 5 to 8.
Secondary (or high) school
Secondary education is generally for kids 14 to 18 years old. This group usually includes Grades 9 to 12.
Post-secondary
Post-Secondary education includes college and university diplomas. Anyone can apply to attend a post-secondary school so long as students have the proper grades and qualifications. The amount of time to complete this education depends on the program and the student's course load.
In college, a student can get a diploma (where they satisfactorily pass all their courses) or a degree (which take longer but are more recognized in certain job sectors).
In university post-secondary is divided into undergraduate programs (where they get a general, advanced, or honours degree) and, if they finish that and decide to continue may take a graduate program (where they get a Master's Degree or PhD).
